Four comedians from Florida to appear at the Savannah Comedy Revue

Comedy is a personal thing for comedian Jeff Zenisek.

“I’ve always felt I was a funny person,” he said. “I just felt it was something I wanted to do. I try to see humor in everything.”

Zenisek and three fellow comedians will perform May 6 at the Savannah Comedy Revue as part of “The Florida Invasion.” All four are based at The Comedy Zone in Jacksonville.

“I tend to write about topics that are universal and broad so everybody can enjoy my comedy,” Zenisek said. “I try to make it about myself. I want people to know who I am after they’ve seen the show.”

But Zenisek avoids topical humor.

“Those jokes don’t have a lot of shelf life,” he said. “And they feel impersonal.”

Becoming a comedian isn’t easy.

“I think I tend to remember the worst things that happen,” Zenisek said. “Good shows are fun and awesome, they lift you up and make you think, ‘This is why I do this.’ Some don’t go well and those make you think, ‘Why am I torturing myself?’”

Comedy shows in bars are the hardest, Zenisek said.

“I’m there trying to make them laugh and they’re like, ‘You’re not going to keep me from talking to people, buddy.’”

It takes a while to develop a comedy career that pays well.

“Right now I’m living with my parents,” Zenisek said.

Zenisek didn’t always intend to be a comedian.

“I still played semi-professional tennis and was still doing pretty well with that, but I got injured,” he said. “I was unable to train and practice, and was just sitting around the house and was frustrated and upset.”

Then Zenisek saw an ad for a comedy workshop.

“I told my parents about it and they were like, ‘You’re doing comedy now?’” he said. “They thought it was stupid.

“My mom came around and was supportive, but my dad didn’t like it,” Zenisek said. “But recently he has started to see how seriously I take it. He sees me preparing and he sees I put on a good show. It took some time, though.”

Jessica Mears isn’t just a stand-up comedian, she’s also a Hooters girl. At the age of 24, she’s a divorcee who lives with her parents and has bad credit.

“My comedy is more edgy than people expect from looking at me,” Mears said. “It’s not all that clean, but it’s not vulgar or rude, either. There’s a lot of innuendo.”

From the time she was small, people have told Mears she’s funny. She’s worked as a stand-up comic for about a year and a half.
