Martin County wildfire contained
MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- Officials say state and county firefighters have contained the flames that tore through more than 1,000 acres in Martin County Wednesday afternoon.
The division of Forestry says lightning sparked this fire last weekend. It smoldered for three days unnoticed until it broke loose Wednesday in Hobe Sound. A sign, that even with some recent rain, we are no where near out of the woods yet, when it comes to our dangerous dry, fire season.
The fire was one mile away from the Medalist Golf Community and very close to I-95. At one point the blaze was threatening a hunting camp, but a helicopter was brought in to save it.
Even though things have calmed down, firefighters will be keeping an eye on the area over night.
Officials say even if everything appears to be ok, windblown firebrands (leaves, sticks & twigs on fire) can be blown up to a mile ahead of the fire. Residents need to close their windows, turn off wind turbines and remove flammable materials away from home. Residents will see glowing and smoldering debris.
What can we do to prevent Wildfires?
Every agency (and large landowner) that owns property in Florida needs to mitigate their property for wildfires. They can’t let the vegetation keep growing without a management plan. Floridians have altered the natural wildfire cycle by suppressing all fires because it threatens property and lives. Therefore, land managers need to manage the land by burning, mowing and chopping the vegetation. If we allow the vegetation to keep growing then destructive wildfires occur.
A good rule of thumb for wildfires – the flame length is 1 ½ to 2 times the size of the vegetation on fire. If the palmettos are overgrown and 5 feet tall then the flame length is approximately 10 feet tall. At that point the fire is burning hot enough to have extensive tree kill and is harder to safely contain.
