Rescuing Has its Rewards
CORNWALL—In the 51 years since its founding, the Little Guild of St. Francis has placed thousands of stray and abandoned cats and dogs in new homes, but even amid the endless cavalcade of needy pets there are a few who stand out from the rest. One such dog, Rusty, a Lab mix, was sent on his way last Friday in a moment that the shelter’s staff found bittersweet. What made Rusty’s good luck in finding the perfect home even more significant is his history and his health. He was originally sheltered at the Little Guild in 2008, when he was brought there as a 3-year-old stray. The young dog, who was already losing his vision, was soon adopted out, but after three years his family decided it could no longer keep him. She said that his nose has been substituted for his eyes as he explores the world. “He sizes up children, dogs and adults by sniffing,” she said. “He was easily able to adjust when he came back to the Little Guild. I would be in yard and he would know my scent. He would make his way to me and rub up against me. He loved to have his belly rubbed. He was smart and knew ‘down,’ ‘sit’ and would give you a ‘high five.’” She said he also displayed some unusual sensibilities for a dog. “Everyone will laugh,” she said, “but he loves the movie ‘Shrek.’ He would sit in front of the TV and his tail and back end would wag so hard he would almost knock you over. We would play classical music for him. I think he was easily able to adjust. We had him in a living room environment at the shelter, but when brought him to the office, he seemed to know where everything was. He was hysterical.” The staff at the Little Guild is confident that the middle-age dog has now found the right home. Carl Teravainen of New Hartford, a wood shop teacher at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge, has shown himself to be a sensitive and responsible adopter for the dog—and had the added benefit of previously adopting cats from the organization. “As soon as he knew he was approved, he started doing research [into the dog’s medical conditions],” Bentz said. “He is looking for his own remedies for the allergies. He’s very devoted to Rusty and it will be a perfect home.” Trevainen said he had turned to the Little Guild when he decided it was time to adopt because of his previous happy experiences with pet adoptions there.St Francis Litchfield - News
