Three Prominent Scholars Awarded Honorary Doctorates
COLLEGE STATION, May 13, 2011 — Three world-class scholars — a Nobel laureate physicist, a National Medal of Technology-winning chemist and a visionary oil and gas magnate — are being honored by Texas A&M University for lifetime achievements in education, research and professional service with honorary doctorate degrees as part of spring commencement ceremonies.
Dr. Charles H. Townes, co-recipient of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the laser and a world-renowned 70-year veteran educator; Dr. James C. Stevens, an international polymer expert with The Dow Chemical Company and winner of the 2002 National Medal of Technology; and His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, deputy premier and chief of the Amiri Diwan, as well as the driving force behind Texas A&M University at Qatar. Each are being recognized this spring by Texas A&M with Honorary Doctor of Letters degrees for their exceptional contributions to the university, to their professions and communities, and to global society.
The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the awarding of the three degrees at its March meeting upon the recommendation of Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin. Townes and Stevens will receive their degrees Saturday (May 14) during commencement ceremonies for the College of Science, scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reed Arena. Minister Al-Attiyah was presented with his degree May 5 in Education City as part of Texas A&M at Qatar’s graduation exercises — three years after serving as the speaker for the university’s inaugural commencement ceremony in Qatar in 2008.
“We are deeply grateful that these three internationally prominent individuals have allowed us to honor them with these degrees,” said Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin. “In addition to giving even more recognition for their distinguished records, bestowing these honorary degrees on Dr. James Stevens, Dr. Charles Townes and His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah brings added distinction to Texas A&M University through these new associations.”
Townes, professor emeritus at the University of California-Berkeley and an international authority on quantum electronics and astrophysics, holds the original patent for the laser along with legendary physicist Arthur Schawlow. He and his assistants at Berkeley detected the first complex molecules in the interstellar medium and first measured the mass of the black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. In addition to his many contributions to science and industry, Townes is equally respected for his efforts at reconciling the claims of science and religion, for which he received the Templeton Prize in 2005 as well as Texas A&M’s inaugural Trotter Prize in 2002.
